culture, music, and identity politics musings from a 20-something Australian-Asian living in Washington D.C.

Captain Planet Returns! October 19, 2006

With climate change, global warming, and sustainable energy becoming increasingly prominent in everyday discussion and media headlines, it was only inevitable that an ITSLATEAGAIN podcast based around such themes come along.

And now, after some delay, it has arrived, featuring a special guest appearance by DJ Vicious, who has supplied a fittingly international mix for your aural consumption.

But this is no run-of-the-mill, semi-apocalyptic, apologetic radio program. Especially given the ‘It’s Your Opinion’ debate some listeners will recall from the Summer podcast, the ITSLATEAGAIN team couldn’t possibly follow up with something so mundane. Instead, we’ve crafted a delicately assembled setlist built around nothing less than the finest environmentally-conscious cartoon in early 90s children’s television…

Yes, the planet-saving green-haired superhero, a product of media mogul Ted Turner’s political whimsy, is back to liberate you from your countrymen’s polluting ways (especially if you live in the States). Featuring songs representing Earth, Fire, Water, Wind, Earth, plus a couple of unexpected themed segments, from the likes of:
– Manu Chao (Spain)
– Jorge Bem Jor (Brazil)
– Indochine (France)
– Xavier Rudd (Australia)
– Metric (Canada)
– Guillemots (United Kingdom)
– The untouchably majestic Johnny Cash covering Nine Inch Nails, plus some old favorites listeners will recall from previous ITSLATEAGAIN podcasts!

And, in case you were wondering, there are indeed background snippets of the very fine Jay Z Hindi remix of “Chalya Chalya” and “Nausea” from the excellent new Beck album.

Dedicated to Victoria: good luck!
